Palmetto–Peartree Preserve
This 10,000 acre preserve was established by The Conservation Fund to protect the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. Other wildlife at the preserve includes black bear, white tail deer, red wolves, and over 100 species of birds. The preserve features two scenic boardwalk trails—one meanders through the wetland forest and another leads visitors out to the Albemarle Sound. Opportunities abound for bird watching, wildlife viewing, and paddling.
